Garage Door Repair in Houston, TX

Illustration of a technician inspecting a sectional garage door track and roller

A garage door that will not open is rarely a mystery once you know what you are looking at. Almost everything that stops a residential door in Houston comes down to five things: a spring that has given out, a cable that has come off its drum, a door that has left the track, an opener that has failed or lost its travel settings, or a safety sensor that is blocked or out of alignment.

This page is the starting point for all of it. If you already know what is wrong, jump to the specific repair. If you do not, the symptom list below will get you there.

What a repair visit actually involves

A real diagnosis on a residential door takes about fifteen minutes, and it follows the same order every time. We test the door by hand before touching the opener, because the opener hides balance problems. We check the spring and its winding cones, both cables and their drums, the rollers and hinges along the full travel of the track, the bottom bracket and its attachment to the door, the panel seams, and then the opener's force and travel settings.

Most Houston homes we see fall into one of a few groups: a 16x7 or 8x7 steel door on a slab-on-grade garage, a single torsion spring over the middle, nylon rollers, and an opener that is somewhere between eight and twenty years old. That combination produces a predictable set of failures, which is why we carry the parts for it.

What it costs before you call

Repair pricing in Houston varies mostly by the part that failed, not by the company. A spring replacement is a different job from a cable replacement, which is different again from replacing a bent bottom section. We publish our own numbers rather than a range copied from a national site:

  • Garage door repair cost in Houston — by job type
  • Spring replacement cost — including what a cycle rating does to the price
  • What we actually charged — median and range from our own completed jobs

When repair is the wrong answer

If the door is over fifteen years old, has rust perforating the bottom section, has a cracked or delaminating panel, or has been repaired twice in two years, the honest recommendation is usually replacement rather than another repair. We would rather tell you that on the phone than take the repair call.

Repair or replace: a Houston decision guide walks through the thresholds with real numbers instead of rules of thumb.

Emergency and after-hours work

Houston has two situations that genuinely cannot wait: a door stuck open on an unoccupied house, and a commercial opening that is not secure. We cover both, and emergency repair explains what we can realistically do at 10pm versus what has to wait for a parts run in the morning. We would rather set that expectation than have you waiting on a truck that is not coming.

Residential and commercial are different jobs

Everything on this page is about homes. Commercial openings — rolling steel service doors, self-storage unit doors, dock doors, fire-rated assemblies — use different hardware, different operators, different codes and a different service model built around keeping a business open. That work lives in its own section: commercial overhead and roll-up doors.

Common questions

How fast can you get to a garage door repair in Houston?

For a door that is stuck open or not secure we prioritise same-day. For a door that is closed and usable — a noisy door, a slow opener, a door that reverses — we normally schedule within one to two business days. Response time depends on where in the metro you are and what time of day the call comes in, and we tell you which window we can actually hold rather than the shortest one.

Do you charge a diagnostic or trip fee?

We quote the repair before we do it, and the price you agree to is the price on the invoice. If we get on site and the problem is something different from what the phone conversation suggested, we stop and re-quote before touching anything.

Is it safe to use my garage door with a broken spring?

No. A torsion or extension spring counterbalances most of the door weight. With the spring broken, the opener is lifting the full weight of the door through the motor, the chain or belt, and the top section. That damages the opener and can drop the door. Leave it closed if it is closed, and do not cycle the opener.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

Torsion springs are wound to a specific number of turns under high tension and are the single most dangerous component on a garage door. We do not recommend DIY torsion work, and we will not talk anyone through it. Extension springs are lower tension but still store enough energy to injure someone, and the correct safety cable and containment hardware matters.

How long does a garage door repair usually take?

Spring replacement is typically one to two hours for a two-spring setup. A cable or roller repair is usually under an hour. Panel replacement depends on whether the section is in stock. We confirm the expected duration when we book the appointment so you are not clearing a whole day.

Do you repair all garage door brands?

Yes for doors and hardware — the door itself is a mechanical assembly and brand matters far less than the spring system and the track. For openers, we stock and service the major residential brands and can get parts for most discontinued models, though on very old openers a replacement is often cheaper than a repair.

Will you try to sell me a new door instead of fixing mine?

If a repair will hold, we quote a repair. Where a door is genuinely past it — rust through the bottom section, a cracked panel, or a third repair in two years — we will say so and explain why, and you are free to ask for the repair quote anyway.
