Garage Door Spring Repair & Replacement Houston

Illustration of a technician inspecting a sectional garage door track and roller

Most garage door spring repair Houston appointments start the same way: a bang from the garage loud enough to hear from the kitchen, and a door that will not lift afterwards. If the car is trapped inside and you are reading this in the driveway, the short answer is that a failed spring is same-day work for us, and the price is on this page before you call.

What follows is how to confirm it is the spring rather than the opener, what we carry on the truck so the job finishes on the first visit, what our garage door spring replacement service includes beyond the part itself, and the one-or-two spring decision you will be asked to make. If you searched for Houston garage door spring repair at seven in the morning with the car stuck inside, this is the page that gets you to a written price fastest.

A spring is not an accessory. It is the counterbalance that makes a door weighing well over a hundred pounds movable with one hand and a motor the size of a shoebox. With the spring broken, the opener is lifting the whole door through its drive gear, the trolley and the top section. That is why we treat a broken spring as urgent, and why the first instruction is always the same: stop pressing the button.

How to tell it is the spring

Torsion springs live on the shaft above the door; extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side. They fail differently, and both leave evidence you can see from the driveway without touching anything.

What you are seeingWhat it usually isWhat to do
Loud bang earlier, door will not lift, opener humsTorsion spring has snappedStop using the opener. Look for a gap in the coil
Door lifts a few inches, then hangs crookedOne of a pair of torsion springs gone, or a cable off the drumStop. This is the failure that bends track
Door is very heavy by hand but the opener still manages itSpring near the end of its cycle lifeBook it before it fails completely
Extension spring stretched and the door sitting low on one sideExtension spring failedCheck the safety cable at the same time
Opener runs and nothing moves at allOften a released trolley or a stripped gear, not the springSee the repair hub

The torsion tell is immediate: a gap of an inch or more in the coil above the centre of the door, usually with the two halves of the spring no longer touching. Extension springs do not leave a gap — they stretch and stay stretched, and the door sits low on that side. If the door is closed and you are unsure, leave it closed. A closed door with a broken spring is in the safest state it can be in, and the diagnosis takes a technician two minutes on arrival.

What we carry on the truck

Same-day spring work is a stocking decision, not a slogan. The vans carry the torsion springs that fit the doors we see across Houston: the common wire sizes, inside diameters and lengths for 7ft and 8ft openings, including the 16x7 and 8x7 doors that most of the homes we work on have. Alongside them: winding cones and centre bearings, drums, cable cut and swaged on site, extension springs with the correct safety cables, nylon rollers, hinges and bottom brackets.

If your door takes something we do not carry — an unusual inside diameter, a very heavy custom door, or a high-cycle spring outside our normal stock — we say so on the phone and come back with it. Fitting the nearest spring off the shelf is how a door ends up out of balance and back on the list in a year.

The cycle rating goes on the invoice

A spring is a consumable with a number attached: the cycles it is rated for. One open-and-close is one cycle, and when a spring reaches its rating it breaks. The ANSI/DASMA rolling-door standards require springs to be designed for "a minimum of 10,000 cycles of operation", and the springs sold for residential work are rated across a wide band above that floor. Two springs with identical wire and length can carry different ratings, and the rating — not the coil of steel — is what you are buying.

So the rating goes on your invoice, with the warranty period next to it. If a quote will not state the cycle rating in writing, that is not a cheaper spring. It is a shorter-lived one, and the labour to fit it is identical.

We will not do the other thing this trade does with that number, which is divide it by an assumed annual usage figure. The old rule of thumb — 1,500 cycles a year for a home door, 5,000 for a commercial one — came from ANSI/DASMA 102-2011 and was removed from the standard in the 2018 edition. Dividing a rating by it produces a lifespan in years that looks authoritative and appears in no current standard. How long your springs last depends on how often your household uses the door, which you know better than we do.

One spring or two

If both springs were installed at the same time, replace both. They have identical cycles on them, so the second is usually close behind the first, and a torsion system with one new spring and one worn spring goes out of balance as they wear at different rates.

Your setupWhat we recommendThe honest reason
Two springs, same age, one snappedReplace both — $300–$600The second has the same cycles on it
A single torsion spring, snappedReplace the one — $200–$350There is nothing to pair it with
Two springs, clearly installed years apartWe quote both optionsWe will not pretend a mismatched pair is matched
Extension springs, one brokenReplace the pair — $150–$300A mismatched pair pulls the door crooked

Nobody has to take the recommendation. We will show you the gap in the failed spring and the wear on the other one, and you decide. What we will not do is replace one spring of a matched pair without telling you the second is on the same clock.

What the visit includes

A spring replacement is not a part swap, and the difference is the part of the invoice that keeps the door working:

  • Confirming wire size, inside diameter and length against the door's actual weight rather than matching what came off
  • Replacing both springs where they were installed together
  • Winding and rebalancing — the door should hold position at half-open
  • Inspecting cables, drums, rollers, hinges and both bottom brackets, because a spring failure often damages its neighbours
  • Resetting the opener's force and travel, which are now wrong
  • Testing the safety reverse and the photo eyes
  • Removing the old springs, and writing the cycle rating and warranty on the invoice

On a sound door that is a one-to-two-hour job. If the spring let go and took the door off the track with it, it is a bigger job — see off track and bent track.

What it costs

JobTypical Houston price
Torsion spring replacement, one spring$200–$350 installed
Torsion spring replacement, both springs$300–$600 installed
Extension spring replacement, pair$150–$300 installed
Spring replacement after a full failure, door off track$450–$900 installed
Service call and diagnosis$0–$99, credited toward an approved repair

Market-informed Houston planning ranges compiled from current local published pricing. They are not a quote. Actual pricing depends on door size, parts, access, urgency and site conditions. Last reviewed: September 16, 2026.

The wider breakdown, including what a cycle rating does to the price and why two quotes for the same words can differ by hundreds, is on the spring replacement cost page.

Houston is harder on springs than the cycle rating suggests

Fatigue is universal: cycles accumulate in every climate. Corrosion is the local addition. DASMA's guidance on spring cycle life is explicit that "rust reduces the effective area of spring wire" and that rust pits become the starting points where "fatigue cracks can accelerate and reduce cycle life" (DASMA TDS 190). The Port of Houston Authority's corrosion manual identifies the local drivers — sustained time-of-wetness, airborne chlorides, and slow drying — and recommends galvanised or high-chromium stainless hardware for exposed service in this climate.

One correction to the version of this claim that circulates widely: Houston's annual mean relative humidity is around 65%, not the 75–90% often quoted. That higher range is the overnight and early-morning summer figure. The corrosion argument does not need the exaggeration. The practical upshot is that the same spring tends to last longer in Katy than it does near the Ship Channel.

What we will not do

We will not fit a customer-supplied spring. Wire size, inside diameter, length and cycle rating all have to match the door weight, and a mismatched spring is a safety problem, not a saving. We will not talk anyone through winding a torsion spring — it is wound to a specific number of turns under high tension and it is the most dangerous component on the door. And we will not quote a spring on a door that is already finished without saying so: rust perforating the bottom section, a cracked panel, or a second major repair inside two years are the signals that the money belongs in a new door, and we would rather tell you that on the phone.

If the door is open right now

Two pages matter more than this one in the next ten minutes. If the door is standing open and you cannot secure it, stuck open covers what to do tonight without pulling the release cord on a door whose weight you cannot hold. If you heard the bang and are wondering whether it is safe to touch anything, broken spring: what to do next is the safety order, step by step.

Common questions

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

Torsion springs are wound to a specific number of turns under high tension and are the most dangerous component on a garage door. We will not talk anyone through it. Extension springs carry lower tension but still store enough energy to injure someone, and the safety cable and containment hardware matter as much as the spring.

Should both springs be replaced if only one broke?

Usually yes, if they were installed together. Both have the same number of cycles on them, so the second is typically close behind the first, and replacing one and leaving the other means paying the labour twice inside a short window. If the springs were replaced at different times, the answer is different and we will say so.

What cycle rating will the new springs have?

The rating is written on the invoice, because it is the number that decides how long the spring lasts. A standard replacement is commonly 10,000 to 20,000 cycles and a high-cycle spring runs well above that. ANSI/DASMA standards set 10,000 cycles as a minimum, not a target, and the old 1,500 and 5,000 annual-cycle figures are no longer in the standard.

How long does a spring replacement take?

Typically one to two hours for a two-spring setup on a residential door, assuming the drums, cables and bottom bracket are sound. If the door has been run out of balance and has damaged the cables or pulled the track, it takes longer and it is quoted as the larger job it is.
